What is Eye Cancer?

Eye cancer is a generic term used to explain many types of tumour involved in different parts of the eye. It arises with the uncontrollable growth of healthy cells present in and around the eye, resulting in the formation of a mass called a tumour. It can also trouble exterior parts of the eye, such as the conjunctiva or eyelid. The most familiar eye cancer is retinoblastoma. Treatment for eye cancer differs by the type and its severity and includes many therapies and medications.


The signs and symptoms of eye cancer include:

  • Blurred vision
  • Total or limited loss of sight
  • Seeing flashes of light
  • Change in the appearance of eye
  • Bulging of one eye


The exact cause of most eye cancers is unspecified. Though many risk factors are there that can increase the risk of having this disease.


Some associated risk factors are:

  • Exposure to UV light
  • Inherited cancer syndromes
  • Aging
  • Light eye colour
  • Being white

Depending on the type and stage of eye cancer and other factors, various treatment options are there to treat this cancer.


  • Surgery

    Various surgical options are there to treat eye cancer- iridectomy, enucleation, iridocyclectomy and orbital exenteration.

  • Laser therapy

    Laser therapy uses heat in the form of laser to treat certain small tumours and can be combined with radiation therapy.

  • Radiation therapy

    Radiation therapy uses powerful particles and rays to kill cancer cells in a particular area of the body.

  • Chemotherapy

    A standard treatment for many cancers, chemotherapy uses anti-cancer drugs to destroy defected cells or stop them from growing.
