Microneedling: What It Is, How It Works, Benefits and What to Expect

Query Form

Microneedling uses a device studded with fine needles to create controlled micro-injuries across the skin's surface - small enough to heal within days but significant enough to activate collagen and elastin production. The principle is deliberately wounding the skin to make it regenerate better than it was before.

Available at clinics across India's major cities, microneedling has become one of the more evidence-backed options in cosmetic dermatology for acne scarring, enlarged pores and early skin ageing.

How Microneedling Triggers Collagen Production

Needles penetrating the dermis trigger a healing cascade - platelets aggregate and release growth factors including PDGF and TGF-β, which stimulate fibroblasts to produce new collagen and elastin. This controlled wound response gradually remodels treated tissue over weeks and months.

Needle depth is the critical variable:

  • Superficial settings (0.25 to 0.5mm) improve product penetration and surface texture

  • Intermediate depths (0.5 to 1.5mm) target acne scars and wrinkles

  • Deeper settings (1.5 to 2.5mm) address significant scarring.

A trained practitioner adjusts depth across facial zones rather than applying uniform settings.

Skin Conditions Microneedling Can Treat

Microneedling is a versatile cosmetic procedure and treats several skin conditions. These are:

  • Rolling, boxcar (round or oval craters) and atrophic acne scars respond to collagen remodelling.

  • Enlarged pores contract as surrounding skin tightens.

  • Fine lines improve as skin density increases over a course of sessions.

  • Reddish stretch marks respond to microneedling combined with appropriate topical actives.

  • Post inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) can be improved with correct needle depth and post-care sun protection.

  • It improves surgical and traumatic scars by helping the skin remodel itself.

  • Improves both tone and texture in skin that is damaged from years of sun exposure.

  • Microneedling combined with minoxidil or PRP is also used for hair loss stimulation on the scalp.

  • Gives dull skin a healthier, brighter look with better overall radiance.

What Happens During a Microneedling Session?

Numbing cream is applied and left on for 30 to 60 minutes. The practitioner moves the device systematically across the face in multiple passes, adjusting needle depth for each zone. The face looks red and feels warm immediately after, similar to a moderate sunburn. The whole session takes 30 to 60 minutes including numbing.

Radiofrequency microneedling adds targeted heat energy through the needles, delivering additional skin tightening that standard microneedling alone does not achieve.

Does Microneedling Hurt? Managing Discomfort

With topical anaesthetic applied correctly, most patients describe scratching or pressure rather than significant pain. The forehead and hairline are more sensitive than the cheeks. Without numbing cream microneedling is genuinely painful.

Before and After Care

Before:

  • Avoid retinol, AHAs, BHAs, and active skincare for three to five days before

  • No tanning or significant sun exposure

  • Avoid waxing or shaving the treatment area on the day of the procedure

Immediately after care: the skin is highly permeable so use only prescribed or practitioner-recommended serums for the first 24 to 48 hours and avoid touching the face unnecessarily

Days two to seven: Gentle cleanser, plain moisturiser and SPF 30 to 50 applied consistently; avoid sweating, swimming or saunas for at least 48 to 72 hours

Sun protection is not optional for two to four weeks after each session. Microneedling disrupts the skin barrier and significantly raises PIH risk with UV exposure particularly relevant in India's climate and skin tone profile.

How Many Sessions Are Needed to See Results?

Most people need three to six sessions, spaced four to six weeks apart. Initial visible improvement appears after two sessions. The full collagen remodelling benefit takes three to six months after the final session to become apparent as new collagen continues to mature.

Maintenance sessions once or twice yearly preserve results and slow ongoing ageing changes in treated areas.

Microneedling at a Clinic vs At-Home Rollers

Clinical devices penetrate to 0.5 to 2.5 mm with sterile single-use cartridges and achieve genuine collagen induction. At-home dermarollers deliver 0.2 to 0.5 mm - sufficient for product penetration and mild texture benefit but not meaningful collagen induction. They carry infection risk if not sterilised correctly and should not be used more than twice weekly.

At-home devices are not a substitute for clinical treatment for scars - they complement a clinical programme but the mechanism differs from collagen-induction at clinical depths.

Who Should Avoid Microneedling?

In certain conditions doctors avoid the use of microneedling. They are:

  • Active acne as needling over inflamed lesions spreads bacteria and worsens breakouts; microneedling should wait until the skin is clear

  • Active rosacea, eczema, or psoriasis flares in the treatment area

  • History of keloid formation or hypertrophic scarring as microneedling risks stimulating excessive scar formation

  • Blood-thinning medications or bleeding disorders

Tips to Maximise Microneedling Results

  • Use vitamin C serum in the morning and retinol at night in the weeks between sessions - both support collagen synthesis and complement the remodelling microneedling initiates

  • Stay hydrated and maintain adequate protein and zinc intake - the skin's repair process is nutritionally demanding

  • Book sessions four to six weeks apart, not shorter as attempting to accelerate results with more frequent sessions risks over-treatment and PIH in Indian skin tones.

Side Effects and Recovery Timeline

Redness, warmth and mild swelling resolve within 24 to 48 hours. Some pinpoint bleeding at deeper settings is normal and resolves within hours. Mild flaking follows over two to four days. Hyperpigmentation, infection or prolonged inflammation are uncommon with appropriate post care but more likely without adequate sun protection in darker skin tones.

Cost of Microneedling in India

The cost of microneedling in India isn't the same across the board; it depends on the type of treatment, where the clinic is located, how experienced the dermatologist is and the technology being used. Radiofrequency microneedling tends to cost more than the standard version.

Since getting the best results usually means going through multiple sessions the total cost also comes down to how many treatments you need and what your specific skin concerns are. The most reliable way to know what to expect, both in terms of treatment plan and cost, is to consult a qualified dermatologist.

Conclusion + Is Microneedling Worth It?

For acne scarring, textural concerns and early ageing, microneedling has earned its place in evidence-based dermatological practice. Results are real but gradual. Risk-benefit is favourable for most adults in its treatment range, provided a trained practitioner performs it with appropriate post-care. Deeper scars benefit from combination with PRP or radiofrequency.

FAQs

  1. How long does it take to see results from microneedling?

Initial surface improvement appears after two sessions. Meaningful acne scar or density change takes three to four sessions and three to six months of collagen maturation after the final treatment. Full results are assessed six months from the last session.

  2. Is microneedling safe for all skin types and tones?

Yes including darker skin tones - an advantage over certain laser treatments that carry higher pigmentation risk in Fitzpatrick types IV to VI. Appropriate depth, adequate numbing and strict sun protection are the key variables for safe outcomes.

  3. Can microneedling permanently remove acne scars?

It significantly reduces rolling and boxcar scar depth and visibility with a full course but complete permanent elimination is uncommon. Icepick scars require additional treatments alongside microneedling.

  4. What should I avoid putting on my face after microneedling?

For 24 to 48 hours: no active ingredients - no vitamin C, retinol, AHAs, BHAs, niacinamide or benzoyl peroxide. Gentle cleanser, plain moisturiser, and physical sunscreen only. Reintroduce actives after 48 to 72 hours or as directed.

  5. How is professional microneedling different from a dermaroller at home?

Clinical devices reach 0.5 to 2.5 mm with sterile single use cartridges and achieve genuine collagen induction. Home dermarollers at 0.2 to 0.5 mm improve product penetration & mild texture.

  6. Can microneedling be done on the neck and body?

Yes neck, bustline, stretch marks and surgical scars all respond to microneedling. Body areas typically need higher needle depths and more sessions given thicker skin and different collagen dynamics.

  7. Is microneedling safe if you have active acne?

Needling over active inflammatory lesions spreads C. acnes to surrounding areas and worsens breakouts. Microneedling should wait until the skin is clear or be performed only on scar areas while carefully avoiding inflamed lesions.

  8. How long does the redness last after a microneedling session?

Mild to moderate redness resolves within 24 to 48 hours. Deeper settings or sensitive skin may extend this to 72 hours. Patients with very reactive skin or rosacea may experience longer lasting redness.

  9. Can microneedling help with open pores?

Yes pore reduction is one of the more consistent outcomes. As the dermis tightens around follicle openings pores appear smaller. Results are visible after two to three sessions and maintained with sun protection and appropriate skincare.

  10. Is microneedling safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Generally not recommended - insufficient safety data exists for microneedling during pregnancy or breastfeeding and topical anaesthetics are also best avoided. Most practitioners decline during these periods.
