What is Prostatitis?

Prostatitis is a condition that arises due to abnormalities in the prostate gland. Prostate gland is a small, walnut shaped organ present in the male body and is responsible for producing the semen fluid. Prostatitis may lead to swelling or inflammation of the gland and may even result in harmful infections. The onset of prostatitis may be sudden or slow as the extent of the disease varies from person to person.

Causes

Prostatitis may be caused due to the presence of bacterial infection in the prostate gland. This condition arises when the bacteria from the urinary tract enter the prostate gland. Prostatitis may also be caused due to nerve damage in the lower urinary tract.

The risk of prostatitis increases with age. Other than age, the following factors increase the risk of prostatitis in people:

  • If the person is using a urinary catheter. (Catheter is a tube that is used to empty the urinary bladder)

Prevention

The disease can be prevented by consulting a doctor as soon as one starts seeing the signs of any kind of urinary or prostate infection.
