The Da Vinci robotic technology is the most advanced platform for minimally invasive surgery available today. The Da Vinci robotic technology enables surgeons to perform delicate and complex surgeries through a few tiny incisions, instead of giving the patient a big cut. When Medanta doctors are performing surgery on the Da Vinci Si (the world’s most advanced surgical robot) miniaturised instruments are mounted on three separate robotic arms, allowing the surgeon maximum range of motion and precision. The Da Vinci’s fourth arm contains a magnified high-definition 3-D camera that guides the surgeon during the procedure. The hand movements of the surgeon are converted into corresponding micro-movements of instruments inside the patient’s body. The system has an ergonomically designed console where the surgeon sits while operating. Surgeons at Medanta use the Da Vinci Si robo to perform a growing number of complex urological, gynaecological, cardiothoracic and general surgical procedures.

How Does It Help?

The Da Vinci surgical system assists surgeons by offering an immersive view of the surgical field, improved dexterity, enhanced precision, and increased comfort while performing a surgery. With the aid of the Da Vinci surgical system, it is possible for more surgeons to perform procedures involving complex reconstruction or dissection.

Heart Valve Disease
  • Da Vinci Robotically-assisted surgery is used to treat many types of complex heart surgeries (or cardiac conditions) with smaller incisions and precise motion control, offering patients improved outcomes. This technology is less traumatic for the...

Prostate Cancer
  • Prostate cancer is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the tissues of the prostate. The prostate is a gland in the male reproductive system located just below the bladder and in front of the rect...

How Is It Done?
What are the benefits and risks of Da Vinci Surgical System?
Preparation
preparation

Preparing for Da Vinci Surgery

  • Preparation for the Da Vinci surgery is just like preparation for any other minimally invasive surgery. The difference here is, the robotic arms carry out the surgery instead of human hands.
  • A patient may be asked to avoid certain medications, depending on the condition to be treated.
  • An MRI or CT scan may be performed to locate and evaluate the exact site of invasion; the reports of the scan will be fed into the Da Vinci machine for greater precision.

Treatment
treatment

During the Da Vinci surgery

  • The patient will be made to lie down on the operation table and a small incision will be made by a robotic arm, which functions on the directions of the surgeon.
  • Sitting at the console, the surgeon will direct the robotic arms to complete the surgery with short and accurate hand movements.
  • The complete surgery happens only with an incision of 1 to 2cm.

Post Treatment
post-treatment

After the Da Vinci surgery

  • The main advantage of the Da Vinci surgery system is that it lets the patient get back to its normal everyday routine in less time as compared to other methods of surgery.
  • If the patient feels any side-effects or nausea, which is quite unlikely to happen, the same should be conveyed to the doctor, and the highly experienced specialists at Medanta shall take care of it in no time.

What Are The Benefits & Risks Of This Technology?

Robotic surgery has revolutionised the world of surgery with its amazing benefits and is increasingly being used for more and more procedures.

Benefits
  • Computerised 3D visualisation for the surgeon. Increased precision because of automation. Decreased blood loss and lesser transfusions. Reduced pain. Reduced risk of infection. Reduced risk of complications. Increased range of motion. Enhanced access. Lesser recovery time.

Risks
  • Lack of flexibility. Temporary pain that is associated with the positioning of the patient. Injury to certain tissues.

What Makes Da Vinci Surgical System So Unique?

• The systematic and automated approach to the Da Vinci technology has minimised the scope for mistakes, both by human and machine.
• The machine features a magnified high-definition 3D vision system, which gives the surgeon an impeccable view of what is happening inside the body.
• The robotic arms attached to the machine are wristed and can bend at a greater angle, as compared to any human hand.
• The Da Vinci surgical system has a dual-console capability to facilitate both training and collaboration during the minimally invasive surgery.
