Fluid accumulation in the lungs causes severe breathlessness, coughing and reduced oxygen levels.
The kidneys often deteriorate alongside the heart (cardiorenal syndrome) limiting how much fluid can safely be removed.
Blood clots form more easily, raising the risk of stroke and lung clots especially when an irregular heart rhythm (atrial fibrillation) is also present.
Cardiogenic shock - a life-threatening condition where the heart is unable to pump enough blood to meet the body's needs is a common complication.
Severe unintended weight loss - cardiac cachexia can also occur.

Cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET): Measures peak VO2 - the maximum oxygen the body can use during effort; below 10 mL/kg/min is one of the main criteria for transplant listing.
Echocardiography: Tracks ejection fraction and right heart function.

1. Medications: Four medicines form the core treatment:
Beta-blockers - protect and slow the heart
