Congenital heart defects are problems with the structure of the heart that are present at birth. The defects disrupt the normal circulation of blood through the heart of the child. The most common congenital heart defects are atrial septal defects (ASD), ventricular septal defect (VSD) and tetralogy of fallot.
Paediatric Cancer or childhood cancer may develop in some areas of the body, including brain and spinal cord, the blood and lymph node system, kidneys and other parts and tissues. Childhood cancers are usually the consequence of DNA changes that take place early in life, even before birth. The most common cancers in children include brain and spinal cord tumours, neuroblastoma, leukaemia and lymphoma.
Chronic kidney disease is a kidney disorder that disrupts the kidney functions and eventually leads to kidney failure. Once the kidney function is lost, the excess fluids and wastes from the blood are not filtered. Children with chronic kidney disease may develop at a slower rate than their peers. The possible causes of kidney disease in children include birth defects, nephrotic syndrome, infection and reflux.
Sickle cell anaemia is an inherited disease of the red blood cells. It is a condition in which enough healthy red blood cells are not present to transport sufficient oxygen throughout child’s body. For parents with sickle cell genes, there is a 25% possibility of having a child with sickle cell anaemia.
A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection that occurs in any part of the child’s urinary system which includes the kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra. In most cases, these infections are seen in the lower urinary tract i.e. the bladder and the urethra. With higher occurrence rate in girls, urinary tract infections are fairly uncommon in children younger than age 3 to 6.
Chronic otitis media (middle ear infection) is an acute bacterial infection and often begins when the child has a sore throat, which generally blocks his/ her ear drums. It is a bacterial or viral infection in the middle ear space, which also affects the mastoid bone (on the back side of the ear). Mastoid bone contains air holes which drain out the middle year.
Gastroenteritis is inflammation of gastrointestinal tract that involves common symptoms like vomiting, diarrhoea and abdominal pain. The inflammation is more common in babies and adolescents. The cause is generally a bacterial or viral infection. The important associated risk is lack of fluid in the body of the child.
