Steps to take before the surgery
Tell your doctor about any medications you are taking. Your doctor may ask you to avoid certain medications a few days or hours before the surgery. You will also be asked to stop eating or drinking 6 – 12 hours before the surgery.
What happens during the Sling surgery procedures?
A sling is made of surgical mesh and is inserted through the abdomen or vagina, around the urethra. This is done to hold the urethra back in normal position, and also add pressure to retain the urine. The abdomen wall will hold the sling in position. The surgery is performed through a single vaginal incision and two incisions in the abdomen. The sling can be made of body tissues like muscle, ligament, or tendons. It can also be made of synthetic materials like plastic.
After the procedure
After the surgery, the patient will require a hospital stay for 2-3 days. The recovery period is about 2-3 months. A thin flexible tube is placed into the bladder to allow urine to drain. Your doctor might advise you to restrain from any kind of strenuous exercises.
