How Is Robotic Radical Prostatectomy Done?
Preparation
  • Steps to take before the treatment

The medications which lead to blood thinning should be avoided at least 7 days before the procedure begins. The doctor will give specific diet instructions which should be followed. The patient should completely avoid consumption of alcohol, smoking, and use of tobacco before the procedure starts.

Treatment
  • What happens during the procedure?

The instruments or robots are controlled by the operating surgeon while the robotic prostatectomy is in the process. The surgeons will administer a telescopic lens inside one of the six small incisions made by the surgeon. The lens provides a magnified 3-dimensional view of the nerves and organs present, which helps the surgeon to precisely remove the cancerous tumour. The prostate gland that contains the cancerous cells is removed, and the urethra and bladder are stitched together. All the small incisions that are left are closed by taking help from the absorbable sutures.

Post Treatment
  • After the procedure

After the procedure is complete, the patient may experience pain, nausea, and constipation, as after effects of the process. These symptoms can easily be controlled by medications prescribed by the doctor.

What are the benefits and risks of Robotic Radical Prostatectomy procedure?

The surgery has revolutionised the world of medical procedures, but as any other surgery, it also has a few risks associated with it.

Benefits
benefits

The advantages of the Robotic Radical Prostatectomy procedure are:

  • Less pain occurs during the process because the incisions are small and almost everything is robotically controlled.
  • Fewer chances of infections because of small incisions.
  • Less blood loss and fewer complications because of more precision and accuracy, as everything is robotically controlled.
  • Shorter hospital stays for the patient and great speed of recovery.
  • Early removal of the urinary catheter.

Risks
risks

The major risks associated with the Robotic Radical Prostatectomy surgery are bleeding, infection, lymphocele (lymph collection), and inflammation in the scrotum.

Limitations
limitations

There are two conditions that count in the major limitations. The two conditions are leakage of urine (urinary incontinence) and impotence (erectile dysfunction).
