Steps to take before the procedure
Inform your doctor about any medications or supplements that you have been taking on a routine basis. Also, tell your doctor if you are diabetic. You will not be allowed to eat for few hours before the surgery.
What happens during the treatment?
Pericardial tapping is done in the ICU. The patient will be given a numbing agent massage on the chest. In order to puncture the pericardial sac, a needle in use. The doctor will do the procedure under an echo test, to monitor the heart movements. The needle will be pushed into the sac, to make space for the catheter. The thin tube will act as a container to collect the extra fluid. The drainage can sometimes take several hours.
After the surgery
The patient is monitored for several hours after the treatment.
