Avoid a High Cholesterol Diet

Studies indicate that men with marginally elevated levels of cholesterol in their late 30s and early 40s have a high risk of heart disease as they age. Track your cholesterol levels annually and eat a lean protein diet that’s high on fibre, and low on sodium and trans fats to keep your cholesterol in check.

Joint Damage and Arthritis

Chronic joint pain in your 40s can signal the onset of diseases like Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis. The intensity of these diseases can be magnified by factors like genetic disposition, pre-existing sports injuries, excessive body weight and sedentary lifestyles.

Stress and Depression

Turning 40 is a major milestone and can come with its fair share of mental upheaval. Emotional turmoil (for instance, marital problems or childrearing) compounded with stresses at your workplace can lead to issues like depression and anxiety. This can leave you irritable, drained and vulnerable to problems like hypertension, sleep loss and panic attacks.

Ageing and Sleep Deprivation

Your 40s can leave you sleeping lesser and lighter than ever due to a range of age-related problems. An enlarged prostate, overactive bladder and hypertension are some of the many ailments that can disrupt your sleep. Make it a point to get 7-8 hours of uninterrupted sleep every night to keep your health on track.

Avoid Being Overweight

It's an established fact that being overweight can put you at the risk of heart disease and stroke. The World Health Organization recommends that men over the age of 40 can greatly reduce this risk by walking for 30 mins, 5 days a week or a minimum of 75 -150 minutes of intense activity in a week.

Avoid Habits That Harm

The intake of alcohol and tobacco can put you on the fast track to developing harmful diseases like lung cancer, liver cirrhosis and hepatitis. Use the occasion of turning 40 to quit these self-destructive habits to improve the quality of your life in your golden years.

Don't Miss Your Annual Checkup

Make it a point to religiously test your vitals in a comprehensive annual checkup to avoid late detection of any serious illnesses. Get a package that screens your health on vital markers like cholesterol, blood pressure, diabetes, heart function and prostate health to name a few.
