Children and Illness

Cold and flu are unavoidable in growing children, especially during the winter months. If your child is prone to infections, then here are 6 foods you must add to their diet.

Citrus Fruits

Citrus fruits such as gooseberry or Amla, limes, oranges, kiwi, and grapefruit are a great source of vitamin C, that is essential to build a strong immune system.

Colourful Vegetables

Introduce beetroots, carrots, red and yellow bell peppers, tomatoes, and broccoli to brighten up your child’s plate and boost their immune system. These vegetables are a rich source of vitamin A, C, and E, beta-carotene, antioxidants and fibre that helps your child fight infections.

Probiotics

Probiotic foods, such as yoghurt with live cultures, are said to lower the risk of colds, ear, and throat infections.

Nuts and Seeds

Nuts, such as walnuts, almonds, flaxseeds, sunflower seeds, etc contain helpful omega-3 fatty acids that improve immunity.

Protein Sources

Lean meats and poultry, such as chicken, are high in proteins and zinc that can help increase white blood count.

Spices

Spices such as turmeric and ginger are generally considered effective to boost the body’s natural immunity when it is fighting an illness. However, do consult your child’s paediatrician, or relevant nutritionist before you start your child on a course of any of these.
