Symptoms

The onset of food poisoning symptoms may occur within 4 hours of eating contaminated food. In some cases, it could also begin in half an hour. These symptoms normally resolve in 1 - 2 days, without any complications or life-threatening problems. It is not easy to recognize the symptoms of food poisoning as they are quite similar to those of other diseases. A few common symptoms are:

  • Vomiting.
  • Diarrhoea.
  • Stomach cramps.
  • Lack of energy and weakness.
  • Abdominal pain.
  • Loss of appetite.
  • High temperature.
  • Chills.

Food poisoning is caused by eating contaminated food. Food infected with bacteria, virus, and parasitic agents start food poisoning.

  • Irritable bowel syndrome.

  • Lactose intolerance.
  • Reactive arthritis.
  • Pericarditis.
  • Guillain-Barre syndrome.

Prevention

Following are some methods that can be used to prevent food poisoning:

  • Refrigerate perishable food.
  • Throw food when in doubt.
  • Wash your utensils and hands nicely.
  • Separate raw food from ready-to-eat food.
  • Cook food at a proper temperature.
  • Avoid dairy products.
  • Drink plenty of water to hydrate the body and replenish lost fluid.
  • Eat bland and easily digestible foods like dry toast, banana, and plain rice.
  • Take probiotics that contain good bacteria and aid in digestion.
  • Rest as much as you can.
