Recovery is Within Reach: Medanta Reinforces Hope against Fatty Liver Disease, Emphasizes Lifestyle Changes

The liver is one of the hardest-working organs in the body. It filters toxins, helps digest food, stores energy, and regulates metabolism. But today, lakhs of people in India are silently living with a condition called fatty liver disease, estimated to affect nearly 39% of India’s adult population[1], with a worrying rise among children.

In simple terms, fatty liver means too much fat stored in liver cells. If this fat keeps building up, it can lead to inflammation, scarring (fibrosis), and in severe cases, even liver failure or cancer if left unmanaged. Most cases today fall under the category of Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD), driven by poor diet, obesity, diabetes, and sedentary lifestyles.

Superspecialist doctors at Medanta-The Medicity, ranked India’s best hospital by Newsweek in 2026, provide patients with the highest quality of care through a team-based, doctor-led model. The hospital’s organisational structure also enables every doctor to help create a culture of collaboration and multispecialty care integration.

Explaining why fatty liver is called a “silent disease”, Dr. Pawan Rawal, Senior Director, Gastroenterology at Medanta Gurugram said, “Fatty liver doesn’t usually cause symptoms early on. It may only show up during an Ultrasound or FibroScan, abnormal liver enzymes on a blood test, or when complications have already begun, which is why it’s called a silent disease.”

High-risk groups include people with Type 2 diabetes, abdominal obesity, high cholesterol or triglycerides, and hypertension. Importantly, even those with normal body weight may develop fatty liver due to high-sugar diets and lack of physical activity.

However, the condition is reversible in its early stages -- even modest lifestyle changes can deliver significant benefits, with a healthy diet the best way to reverse the disease. With timely intervention, the liver’s remarkable ability to heal can be harnessed -- offering patients a real chance at recovery and long-term health.

Dr. Pawan Rawal, Senior Director, Gastroenterology at Medanta Gurugram, recommended a diet focusing on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins such as omega-3-rich fish, and healthy fats like olive oil and nuts. He also advised patients to avoid refined carbohydrates, sugary beverages, processed meats, and fried foods. He said, “Your fatty liver didn't develop overnight, and healing takes time and consistency. Losing just 3-5% of your body weight can improve your liver health by a lot. Additionally, it helps to quit smoking, and to completely stop drinking alcohol to let your healing liver rest.”

Regular physical activity and rest are equally critical. Dr. Rawal said that 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week, including brisk walking, can significantly improve liver health, and emphasized that all adults should aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep.

He said, “Fatty liver does not develop overnight, and neither does recovery. Sustainable, long-term lifestyle changes are the most effective way to reverse the condition and prevent complications.”
