Medanta Institute of Lung Transplantation brings together a large team of multidisciplinary chest surgeons and innovation to offer patients with end-stage lung disease a second chance at life. It is a JCI-accredited centre staffed by the country’s largest team of chest surgeons, including expert pulmonologists, making Medanta a centre of choice for this life-saving procedure. We have a state-of-the-art in-house diagnostic facility for accurate staging, and patient evaluation for single-, double-, and lobe-specific transplants. We are also supported by multiple superspecialities helping us address each patient’s unique needs, including multi-organ transplants. The Institute practices a multi-modality approach with a focus on use of minimally invasive techniques, like robotic surgery, to improve outcomes. Among the few lung transplant centres in north India, Medanta has pioneered several complicated and innovative surgeries with exceptional success rate, including the first robotic double lung transplant.
Potential recipient identified by a treating doctor/pulmonologist.
Patient screened in the OPD by Medanta LT team.
Patient screened in the OPD by Medanta LT team.
If considered fit for evaluation, admitted to the ward for detailed Lung Transplant Evaluation.
Multi-disciplinary board analysis the LT evaluation results. Those meeting all criteria, with no contraindications are accepted for LT and procedure explained to patient and family.
Those accepting the same, are listed at NOTTO site requested to shift near to Medanta, waiting for a lung offer.
When a donor lung offer comes, the donor details are matched with our recipient on the NOTTO waitlist (blood group, height and lung volume) and if matched, a claim is placed.
NOTTO looks at claims from various hospitals and allots lungs based on seniority and geographical proximity between donor and recipient hospitals.
When lungs are allotted to us, Retrieval Team (Surgeons, Coordinators, OT nurse) goes to donor hospital with all the equipment.
If lungs acceptable, the same are retrieved, preserved by a special technique and the team returns by the fastest route.
In the meantime, the Recipient Team at hospital (Pulmonologist, Surgeons, Anesthetics, coordinators) calls recipient in, does a quick check, admits and shifts to OT for surgery.
By the time, the retrieval team returns to Medanta, the recipient team at Medanta has prepared the chest for LT.
The Lung transplant is carried out immediately under ECMO support.
At the end of lung transplant, the ECMO is gradually weaned off and patient shifted to ICU under ventilator support.
After extubation, patient shifted to ward, intensive rehabilitation continued, discharged to home care.
