Video-assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery is a minimally invasive approach to thoracic surgery in which a small camera (thoracoscope) and working instruments are introduced through two or three keyhole incisions, typically less than two centimetres each, avoiding the large rib-spreading incision of conventional thoracotomy. The thoracoscope transmits a clear, magnified image of the chest cavity to a high-definition monitor, giving the surgeon detailed visualisation of the lung, pleura, mediastinum, and diaphragm throughout the procedure. VATS is now the standard of care at Medanta for a broad range of thoracic conditions including early-stage lung cancer resections, pleural effusion management, pneumothorax surgery, mediastinal biopsy, and pericardial window procedures. Patients undergoing VATS experience significantly less postoperative pain, lower rates of wound infection, shorter hospital stays, and faster recovery of pulmonary function compared with those treated by open thoracotomy.
