Severe blunt chest trauma - most commonly from road traffic accidents - can fracture multiple adjacent ribs, creating a segment of chest wall that moves paradoxically inward during inspiration (flail chest), severely compromising the mechanics of breathing and oxygenation. Historically managed with prolonged mechanical ventilation, flail chest is now increasingly treated with surgical rib fixation using titanium plates and screws that stabilise the fractured segments, restore normal chest wall dynamics, and dramatically reduce the need for ventilator support.
