When chest wall resection for large tumours creates structural defects spanning multiple ribs or involving the sternum, reconstruction is not optional - an unsupported chest wall leads to paradoxical breathing, mediastinal shift, and impaired respiratory mechanics. Medanta uses patient-specific 3D-printed titanium implants, designed from preoperative CT DICOM data, to recreate the precise geometry of the resected bony thorax. The implants are manufactured to match each patient's unique curvature, rib spacing, and defect dimensions, allowing the surgeon to fit and fix the prosthesis accurately at the time of resection without intraoperative improvisation. This approach is supplemented by synthetic mesh (PTFE or polypropylene) to close soft tissue gaps and support the implant. The outcome is a mechanically stable, anatomically correct chest wall reconstruction that supports normal breathing, protects underlying organs, and avoids the donor-site morbidity associated with autologous bone grafts.
