Artis-Zeego Endovascular Surgical Cath Lab

The Cath Lab is a floor-attached imaging system that provides advanced imaging and helps in treating people with structural heart diseases. The Artis-Zeego is a cath lab and an operating room combined into one room. It provides the ability to perform both minimally invasive, catheter-based procedures and conventional open surgery simultaneously in the same room.

Da Vinci Surgical System

The Da Vinci surgical system is a kind of robotic surgical system designed to facilitate complex surgeries, wherein a surgeon controls it using a console. It is called the “Da Vinci” surgery because Leonardo Da Vinci’s human anatomy study led to the designing of the first robot in the history of mankind.

  • Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery

The coronary artery bypass surgery aims at improving the blood flow to the heart.  CABG is conducted to treat coronary heart diseases. When coronary arteries are completely or partially blocked an operation to get around, or “bypass” the blockage is recommended. It’s like taking an alternate route when your usual ride home is clogged up by traffic. The operation builds that bypass. CABG is a surgical procedure in which one or more blocked coronary arteries are bypassed by a blood vessel graft to restore normal blood flow to the heart. These grafts usually come from the patient’s own arteries and veins located in the chest (thoracic), leg (saphenous) or arm (radial). The graft goes around the blocked artery (or arteries) to create new pathways for oxygen-rich blood to flow to the heart.

  • Valve and Ross Surgery

The goal of heart valve surgery is to cure the problem or lengthen life by restoring the function of heart valves, whether they are diseased or damaged. There are two types of valve surgeries - valve repair surgery and valve replacement surgery. Many surgical procedures are available to repair or replace heart valves, including open-heart surgery or minimally invasive heart surgery.  Most valve replacements involve the aortic and mitral valves. The Ross Procedure (or Pulmonary Autograft) is a cardiac surgery operation where a diseased aortic valve is replaced with the person's own pulmonary valve. A Pulmonary Allograft (valve taken from a cadaver) is then used to replace the patient's own pulmonary valve.

  • Aneurysm Repair

Aneurysm repair surgery involves replacing the weakened section of the vessel with an artificial tube, called a graft. The surgeons will have to open either the stomach area (for abdominal aneurysms) or the chest (for thoracic aneurysms).

  • Minimally Invasive and Robotic Surgery

Minimally invasive heart surgery (also called Keyhole Surgery) is when a conventional operation is performed on or inside the heart using small incisions, as an alternative to open-heart surgery. Surgeons don't cut through the breastbone (sternotomy). Rather, they operate between the ribs, which may result in less pain and a quicker recovery for many people. Minimally invasive heart surgery may be performed to treat a variety of procedures like mitral valve, tricuspid valve, epicardial lead placement, atrial septal defect (ASD), patent foramen ovale (PFO), myxoma, and aortic valve surgeries

  • Surgery for Atrial Fibrillation

The goals of treatment for atrial fibrillation include regaining a normal heart rhythm (Sinus Rhythm), controlling the heart rate, preventing blood clots and reducing the risk of stroke. Surgical treatment for atrial fibrillation is termed as Maze procedure or ablation. Surgeon can use small incisions, radio waves, freezing, or microwave or ultrasound energy to create scar tissue. The scar tissue, which does not conduct electrical activity, blocks the abnormal electrical signals causing the arrhythmia. The scar tissue directs electric signals through a controlled path, or maze, to the lower heart chambers (ventricles). Maze procedure can be done in different ways. It may be done through small cuts in the chest. Or it may be done during open-heart surgery.

  • Heart Transplant

Heart transplant, or a cardiac transplant, is a surgical transplant procedure performed on patients with end-stage heart failure or severe coronary artery disease when other medical or surgical treatments have failed. Procedure is to take a functioning heart from a recently deceased organ donor and implant it into the patient. The patient's own heart is removed and replaced with the donor heart.

  • LVAD (Left Ventricular Assist Device)

A left ventricular assist device (VAD -- also called ventricular assist system or VAS) is a type of mechanical circulatory support device (MCSD). It is a mechanical pump that is implanted in patients who have heart failure to help the heart’s weakened left ventricle (major pumping chamber of the heart) pump blood throughout the body.

LVAD may be used in two ways

    • Bridge-to-transplant- which means to help a patient survive until a donor's heart becomes available for transplant.
    • Destination therapy - which is an alternative to heart transplant

  • Congenital Heart Surgery (ASD/ VSD Surgery)

It's done to correct a hole in the chambers of the heart. During the surgery, a cut is made down the front of the chest that divides the breastbone to reach the heart. A heart-lung machine is used to pump blood and act as the lungs during the surgery. Then the surgeon patches up the hole. Over time, the child’s own cells grow over the patch, anchoring it in place even more.

Why choose Medanta?

Our Heart Institute is one of the few institutes to follow the Heart Team approach. At Medanta, patients for cardiac disease are evaluated collectively by a team of interventional cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, and clinical and preventive cardiologists. They work together so that the patient receives the benefit of comprehensive advice with high technical and ethical standards. Our aim is to contain the progression of the heart disease while empowering the recovering patient through innovative therapies.
