Medanta Highlights Vascular Health to Prevent Diabetic Foot Amputations & Varicose Vein Complications in Guwahati

Diabetes, a growing concern in India, significantly increases the risk of vascular diseases, including peripheral artery disease (PAD). Uncontrolled diabetes can damage blood vessels, leading to poor circulation, slow wound healing, and an increased risk of foot ulcers and amputations. Varicose veins, while often considered a cosmetic issue, can be a sign of underlying vascular problems and can worsen if left untreated and cause bleeding and ankle ulcers . Northeast India, including Assam, faces unique healthcare challenges due to limited access to specialized care and a higher prevalence of risk factors like diabetes and sedentary lifestyles, which contribute to a greater burden of vascular diseases in the region. According to a study by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), over 5.5% of the population in Assam suffers from Type 2 diabetes. This high prevalence underscores the urgent need for increased awareness and improved access to diabetes management and vascular care in the state. There is a critical need to raise awareness about the importance of preventive measures and early intervention to improve patient outcomes and avoid amputation. During the press conference, Dr. Rajiv Parakh addressed the specific challenges faced by diabetic patients in managing foot infection and preventing vascular complications. He highlighted the importance of comprehensive vascular assessments, including non-invasive imaging techniques, to detect early signs of PAD and latest motorized techniques to open blocked arteries. He also discussed advanced treatment options for varicose veins, such as endovenous laser ablation (EVLA), RFA, Glue and sclerotherapy, which are minimally invasive and can significantly reduce leg swelling and pain symptoms. Dr. Parakh also emphasized the importance of lifestyle modifications, including blood sugar control, regular exercise, and smoking cessation, in preventing the progression of vascular diseases in diabetic patients. He stressed the need for a multidisciplinary approach involving endocrinologists, vascular surgeons, and podiatrists to provide comprehensive care and prevent amputations. Dr. Rajiv Parakh, Chairman, Peripheral Vascular and Endovascular Sciences at Medanta, Gurugram stated, “Diabetes significantly increases the risk of vascular complications, including peripheral artery disease. Early diagnosis and comprehensive management are crucial for preventing serious outcomes like foot ulcers and amputations. By raising awareness about the link between diabetes and vascular health and providing access to advanced motorized technique to open blocked arteries, we can significantly improve the quality of life for diabetic patients in Guwahati and across Northeast India.” Aligned with Medanta's vision, this initiative underscores the hospital's commitment to healthcare excellence and community outreach.
