Medanta Doctors Stress on Protecting Liver Health through Awareness and Healthy Living

The liver is one of the most vital organs in the human body, responsible for removing toxins, aiding digestion, processing nutrients, regulating blood sugar levels, and supporting immunity. It has great regenerative powers, but its role as a an important detoxification center of the body makes it vulnerable to the toxins it processes. Too many toxins -- processed and high-fat foods, sugar, alcohol, and even certain medications -- can overwhelm the liver’s ability to function and damage the organ.

Liver diseases often progress silently, with symptoms appearing only after significant damage has occurred. Specialists at Gurugram-based Medanta- The Medicity, named India’s Best Hospital by Newsweek in 2026, emphasized that greater awareness and early intervention are critical to preventing long-term complications and improving outcomes.

Dr. Swapnil Dhampalwar, Senior Consultant, Hepatology at Medanta Gurugram said, “Many liver conditions develop gradually and may not show symptoms in the early stages. People often ignore persistent fatigue, loss of appetite, abdominal discomfort, or unexplained weight changes. Timely diagnosis through regular health check-ups and blood tests can help detect liver disease early and prevent long-term complications.”

According to Dr. Dhampalwar, conditions such as fatty liver disease, viral hepatitis, alcohol-associated liver disease, cirrhosis, and liver cancer are witnessing a steady rise, driven by factors including sedentary lifestyles, obesity, diabetes, unhealthy eating habits, and excessive alcohol consumption.

He said maintaining liver health does not necessarily require drastic detox routines or supplements. Instead, he noted, sustainable lifestyle changes can significantly reduce the risk of liver damage. A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and proteins can help support liver function naturally. Foods such as leafy greens, berries, citrus fruits, and omega-3-rich fish may also support the liver’s natural detoxification processes.

Dr. Dhampalwar added, “There is a wide-spread misconception that liver disease only affects people who consume alcohol excessively. In reality, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease also called as metabolic-dysfunction associated steatotic liver disease is increasingly being diagnosed in individuals with obesity, diabetes, poor dietary habits, and low physical activity. Prevention remains the most effective strategy.”

He further advised people to avoid self-medication, unnecessary supplements, smoking, and excessive alcohol consumption, all of which can place additional strain on the liver. Regular exercise, adequate hydration, and proper sleep also play an important role in maintaining overall liver health.
