Risk Factors Causing Oral Cancer
  • Smokers have increased cancer risk of 6× compared to non-smokers

  • Chewing tobacco / “gutka” increases the risk 50 fold for cancers of the cheeks, gums and inner lips.

  • Heavy alcohol consumption: Increases risk by about 6×.

  • HPV (Human Papillomavirus): A sexually transmitted virus that can infect the mouth and throat and may lead to cancer.
