Symptoms

The symptoms of prostatitis include:

  • Problems in urinating
  • Burning sensations while urinating
  • Urgent or hesitant urination
  • Need to urinate multiple times
  • Presence of blood in the urine
  • Fever
  • Abdomen pain
  • Pain in the lower portions of the body
  • Irritation and ache in the penis area
  • Painful ejaculation
  • Pain during sexual intercourse

Causes

Prostatitis may be caused due to the presence of bacterial infection in the prostate gland. This condition arises when the bacteria from the urinary tract enter the prostate gland. Prostatitis may also be caused due to nerve damage in the lower urinary tract.

Risks

The risk of prostatitis increases with age. Other than age, the following factors increase the risk of prostatitis in people:

  • If the person has had a pelvic injury
  • If the person has HIV/AIDS
  • If the person has had a prostate biopsy
  • If the person is using a urinary catheter. (Catheter is a tube that is used to empty the urinary bladder)

Prevention

The disease can be prevented by consulting a doctor as soon as one starts seeing the signs of any kind of urinary or prostate infection. Protecting the pelvic area by using protective gears can be used to prevent injury to the area. Limiting the intake of alcohol, tobacco products and staying hydrated also helps in preventing the disease.
