Arthrodesis comes to practice when conservative treatments to treat osteoarthritis fail. It treats joint pain efficiently and eliminates complication of a surgery.
Steps to be taken before the procedure
Before undergoing the surgical process, it is utmost important to evaluate if the person is in good medical condition. Our specialised doctors at Medanta will make sure you optimise your general health prior to the surgery.
During the procedure
Bone grafting is the common procedure for Arthrodesis. The doctor will take the decision on the type of bone graft a patient may require. The surgery is done by giving general anaesthesia and then the incision is made in the skin. The cartilage is then cleared, and the bone to be placed will be shaped to fit in exactly. It will be fitted using pins, screws, or plates. After the bone is placed and fitted, the doctor will put stitches so as to heal the wound.
After the procedure
The doctor advises no physical exertion after the surgery. The patient will be asked to apply ice pack, and hold his/her leg or arm in an elevated position. After two weeks of rest, doctors will advise the patient physical activities to strengthen the muscles.
