Living After Death – A Heart Transplant Story

This is the story of a 48-year old lady who was registered at Medanta with dilated cardiomyopathy and end stage heart failure for the heart transplant program. The National Organ & Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO) informed Medanta about an altruistic brain dead donor at a hospital in Indore whose blood group matched with the patient. The Journey Begins The heart transplant team activated the transplant protocols. The lady was admitted and anti – rejection measures were initiated.

At the same time, the heart transplant team led by Dr. Anil Bhan was flown to Indore. They harvested the organ and moved it to a transport machine which was airlifted and driven to different parts through three states. Helped by Green Corridors Green Corridors were created within Indore covering a distance of 11 Km in barely nine minutes. Another Green Corridor was created from IGI airport to Medanta-The Medicity covering 18 kms in 16 minutes. (Green corridors’ have manually operated street signals to avoid peak traffic for exigencies, mainly medical. They are now being frequently used to transport organs within and between cities.) Successful Transplant The heart was successfully transplanted to the recipient within a record time of 3 hours 50 minutes from the time the organ was harvested. She was shifted to the CCU and recovered well under the watchful eyes of the team.
