What is Inflammatory Breast Cancer?

Inflammatory Breast Cancer is a condition that makes the breast red, swollen, and tender. It is a rare disease in which cancer cells block lymph vessels in the skin of the breast which causes inflammation or redness.


The following are some typical signs and symptoms of Inflammatory Breast Cancer:

  • Redness involving part or all of the breast
  • Pain in the breast
  • Bruise on the breast which persists
  • Sudden swelling in the breast
  • Swollen lymph nodes under the arm, above the collarbone, or in the neck
  • Itching of the breast
  • Nipple changes or discharge


Factors that can increase the risk of Inflammatory Breast cancer include:

Family history of breast cancer in general may increase the risk of developing inflammatory breast cancer, but no specific genetic mutations or changes have been found for this type of breast cancer.


Inflammatory breast cancer can’t be prevented. The likelihood of developing the condition may be reduced by maintaining a healthy weight.
