The most common symptom of hernia is a lump or bulge in the affected area. It is mostly felt on standing up. Other symptoms include:

  • Pain in the affected region (mainly the lower abdomen).
  • Weakness, a feeling of heaviness, or a pressure in the abdomen.
  • Gurgling.
  • Burning or aching near the abdomen.

Causes

Hernia is mainly caused by straining of weak muscles. It can take a while to develop or could also surface in a short period of time. Causes of muscle weakening include:

  • Picking heavy objects.
  • Constipation or diarrhoea.
  • Persistent sneezing or coughing.
  • Obesity and smoking.

 

Risks

The main risk factors of this disease include:

  • Heavy lifting.
  • Pregnancy (chronic).
  • Obesity.
  • Straining during bowel movements.

To prevent hernia, one should practice the following:
