About the Speciality

The Electrophysiology and Pacing Division of Medanta Heart Institute is in place to help patients who suffer from the problem of irregular beating of the heart (arrhythmias), including atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter and ventricular tachycardia. Our dedicated Electrophysiology team has enormous experience in all kinds of Electrophysiology studies, Radiofrequency Ablations, Pacemaker and Device Implantations and Resynchronization Therapy. Three dimensional cardiac mapping using Carto Technique and myocardial scar identification by NOGA enable our electrophysiologists to perform the most complicated RF ablations with ease.

At Medanta, we have an integrated healthcare centre with a dedicated team of cardiac surgeons, cardiologists, critical care team, physiotherapists, nurses and technicians who work in tandem to provide comprehensive, multidisciplinary care to patients suffering from heart ailments. We perform cardiac surgery using state of the art technology, including the hybrid operating suite, robotic heart surgery, and minimally invasive valve and coronary heart bypass techniques. We have dedicated Cardiothoracic critical care units with 24 hour 1:1 nursing and a Heart Command Center to treat patients with cardiac emergencies. The care offered to patients does not end with the end of treatment in the hospital and is extended to their homes in form of cardiac rehabilitation programs. These medically supervised programs are created to suit the individual needs of the patients for exercise, lifestyle changes, education and emotional support by a team of doctors, physiotherapists, nurses, dieticians and psychiatric counsellors.

  • 256 Slice CT

    A 256 slice CT scan enables cardiologists to get a 3-D image of the entire heart which permits them to have a closer look at the arteries, and the anatomy of the heart, in general. The scan offers excellent details that helps the doctors in treating the disease more effectively.

  • Gamma Camera

    Gamma camera is a type of imaging technique which is used to carry out functional scans of various parts of the body including the brain, lungs, and the heart, among others. A gamma camera images the radiations and this technique is known as Scintigraphy.

  • A cardiac electrophysiology study (EP test or EP study)

    Cardioversion is a way of restoring the regular rhythm of the heart when it starts to beat too fast or in an irregular manner. There are two types of cardioversions – pharmacological, where medicines are used to restore the rhythm, and, electrical, where electric shocks are sent to the heart until the normal rhythm is restored.

  • RF Ablation

    Radiofrequency ablation is a treatment that uses radiofrequency energy to destroy a small area of heart tissue that is causing irregular heartbeats (arrhythmias). This treatment is advised by your doctor when medicines are not tolerated or are ineffective. The procedure is most often used to treat a condition called Supraventricular Tachycardia (SVT) which occurs because of abnormal conduction fibers in the heart.

  • ICD (Implantable Cardioverter Defribrillator)

    ICD’s is a battery powered device placed under the skin that keeps track of your heart rate. If an abnormal heart rhythm is detected, the device will deliver an electric shock to restore a normal heartbeat. Your doctor may recommend an ICD if you are suffering from LQTS, Brugada Syndrome, Ventricular Arrhythmia and Cardiac arrest.

  • Cardioversion

    Cardioversion is a way of restoring the regular rhythm of the heart by providing electric shocks to your heart through electrodes placed on your chest. . There are two types of cardioversions – pharmacological, where medicines are used to restore the rhythm, and, electrical, where electric shocks are sent to the heart until the normal rhythm is restored. It is used to treat atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter and other kinds of arrhythmias.

  • Pacemaker Implantation

    It is a small battery-operated device that helps the heart beat in a regular rhythm. It produces the electrical impulses that stimulate your heart to beat. A pacemaker may be recommended to ensure that the heartbeat does not slow to a dangerously low rate. There are different types of pacemakers -:

     

    • Single chamber
    • Double chamber
    • Biventricular – Also known as Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) is used to treat the delay in heart ventricle contractions that occur in some people with advanced heart failure
