This procedure reduces the pressure on the right side of the heart and allows the heart to function more efficiently thereby improving the blood flow to the lungs.
Steps to take before Atrial Septostomy
Our doctor at Medanta might recommend you a few medications to help manage the condition before the corrective surgery. Discuss with your doctors the consequences of the treatment and any other medication that you have been taking.
What happens during the process?
The surgery is performed under general anaesthesia. The Balloon Atrial Septostomy involves placing a balloon in the right atrium and then into the left. The balloon enters the heart passage with the help of a catheter. The catheter is pulled into the passage, and the balloon is then released. This process is repeated several times, till there is an adequate gap between the atriums, and then the tube is removed. During Blade Atrial Septostomy, a small blade is attached to the tip of the catheter. This helps in making a cut through the atrial septum and widens it.
After Atrial Septostomy
After the surgery, the patient needs to be observed in intensive care unit. The availability of supplemental oxygen is mandatory, and haemoglobin levels also need to be maintained.
