Lung cancer is the commonest cancer in the world. The incidence has been increasing over the years. It is one of the leading causes of deaths in the world as well as in India. With the prevalence of smoking and tobacco abuse in India, this figure is predicted to rise over the next few decades. Early lung cancer is commonly misdiagnosed as tuberculosis in our country. At present most cases are found to be advanced lung cancer not amenable to curative surgical resection.
Lung cancer if detected early can be given a curative treatment by surgery, radiotherapy with additional chemotherapy. There is recent literature which is showing that lung cancer can be detected early with a screening protocol of low dose CT in people more than 40 years and smokers. At Medanta, we run a multidisciplinary team approach to the management of lung cancer. The team includes pulmonologist, thoracic surgeon, medical oncologist, radiation oncologist, radiologist and pathologist. We run regular screening programs for lung cancer as a part of our annual health checkup programs. Any suspected case is quickly discussed in a tumor board (multidisciplinary team meeting) and treatment is initiated promptly. All patients are subjected to a lifelong follow up protocol by the team. In addition, we provide palliative therapies as well.
Our dedicated thoracic surgeons at Medanta complement the multidisciplinary team for lung cancer. Surgeons trained abroad have vast experience of treating lung cancer and thoracic malignancies. We offer complete diagnostics (CT PET scan, bronchoscopy, endoscopic ultrasound, Mediastinoscopy) and therapeutic procedures including surgery, chemotherapy and latest radiotherapy techniques. Surgical procedures are performed using the latest technology of minimally invasive surgeries such as robotics and video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS).
Myasthenia gravis is a disorder of immunity in which antibodies are produced against the patients own nerve junctions. Due to this decreased nerve condition, the patient gets muscular weakness of the eyelids, limbs, and breathing muscles particularly at the end of the day. Myasthenia is a condition that is often misdiagnosed/under diagnosed. The treatment includes giving medications and in severe cases plasmapheresis (exchange transfusion), intravenous immunoglobulins (to improve immunity and kill antibodies). Thymus gland is present in the chest and is responsible for immunity of the growing foetus, but this gland has no use post birth. In cases of myasthenia it has been observed that 50% of patients will have either a nodule in the thymus (Thymoma) or an increase in the size of the thymus. There is evidence to suggest that patients with myasthenia gravis will benefit with removal of the thymus (thymectomy).
At Medanta, we provide multidisciplinary treatment approach. Our team has years of experience working with myasthenia gravis patients.
Treatment begins with patients assessed by one of our neuromuscular specialists, who decide on the best course of treatment and tests as needed for diagnosis. Our multidisciplinary team comprises the following specialists:
